2017 UNILAG Alumni General Elections: Olusegun, Alimson, others emerge winners at Lagos branch, By Solomon Oladipupo and Rachael Fadimu

Members of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni Association, Lagos State branch, slugged it out on Sunday for the positions of vice chairman, general secretary and publicity secretary of the state branch.

The election, which saw to the end of 2015 executive members and the rise of new set of executives who will run the alumni branch for the next two years, was held at the Julius Berger Hall of the institution.

Incumbent vice chairman, Mazi Sam Anyamele ran against Adeleke Olusegun to retain the position of vice chairman while Alhaji Ganiy Alimson chairman opposed Ngwu Nnaemeka Franklin as the general secretary.

Florence Okeke and Ajibade Temitope Oluwabukola vied for the position of the publicity secretary.

However, Ayamele lost to Olusegun after the latter clinched a total of 132 votes from the overall 173 valid votes. Also, Alimson edged victory over Franklin who could only secure 21 votes of total 168 valid votes.

Okeke, however, retained her position as the publicity secretary after a 95 votes margin over Ajibade Olubukola who secured only 39 votes.

Those who ran unopposed and were reinstated as new executives include the chairman, Dr. Lukumon Adeoti; financial secretary, Ayokunle Akinrimisi ; treasurer, Ebun Oluranti;  assistant general secretary,  Olawale Oyinlola;  social secretary, Taiwo Ajasa and the welfare secretary.

Speaking after the election, Olusegun praised the trust members of the state branched placed on him. He reassured of this readiness to serve.

He said, “I will say that I am am very happy because of the love and the turn out that people have for me, not because I am a better candidate, but I know that it has a purpose.

“I believe that God already has good structures for us, and I believe that sooner or later we will be seeing manifestation in good form.’’

Meanwhile, Ayamele has described the election process as not only free and fair, but also as structured on him. He admitted that numbers played on him.
