The biting sun of Tuesday afternoon – 11th of September, 2018 – in the University of Lagos (UNILAG) charged into an atmosphere of funfair as students and art lovers in the varsity stormed various roads in the campus on energetic dance. It’s the 2018 UNILAG Africaribbean Carnival.

The dance parade, which took the participants around the campus, was full of colourful displays of traditional attires of the Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and Edo tribes of Nigeria, among others.

Others rocked indigenous wears of Jamaican, Brazilian and Chinese origin in celebration of what they call the “African/Caribbean spirit.”
Students– some hanging on from the balconies of their halls of residence–, staffs and passers-by all watched on in gay as participants reeled out various dance steps.

Afro beat sound boomed from a speaker in an accompanying vehicle, providing the required tempo for the parade.
The 13th edition of the carnival was a class examination of the 300Level students of the Department of Creative Arts, Faculty of Arts, UNILAG, for the course, African/Caribbean Theatre Laboratory (THA338).

Organizers explained that the carnival is aimed at celebrating humanity, most especially Africans within Africa and in the diaspora. The dance culminated at the varsity’s sports centre where the main celebration was staged. Popular comedian, Helen Paul, was among the special guests that graced the event.
