The Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has said that the Nigeria Police Force would do their job properly to ensure that the killer of newly-graduate College of Medicine, University of Lagos (MEDILAG) student doctor, Stephen Urueye, would not go scot free.

The Press Club, UNILAG in April had reported that Urueye, who was observing his houseman ship at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), was stabbed to death in the infamous canal area of Idi-Araba on April 4th, 2019 – only two days after his graduation.

Following his arrest, The Lagos Police Command of the Itire Division arrested two persons suspected to be connected to the death, according to a Channels Television report.

The PUNCH in its May 25th, 2019 publication reported concern by family member over the failure of the police to update them on the prosecution of those arrested for the graduate’s murder.

“We have not heard anything from the police. They have not contacted the family at all. We don’t know what happened to the suspects they arrested. We don’t know whether they have been released or not.

“It is almost two months now, no information from the police; no justice. At least we deserve to know what is happening,” the newspaper quoted Mrs Amina Wahab, an elder sister of the deceased, to have said.

However, in an interview with The Press Club,UNILAG, who raised concern on the worries, Prof. Ogundipe assured of the police’s ability to ensure justice.

He said, “When something is in the hands of the police, it’s out of our hands; ours is just to send our lawyer to them to give us an update.

“The police can take a long time to investigate but the culprit will not go scot free.”

Ogundipe enjoined students to be conscious of their environment in order to ensure their security.

“In Akoka here, we are surrounded by slumps; it is the students that must take security issue seriously; every one of us must be security conscious.

“I want to thank God that now I get a lot of text messages; so if you hear anything like that, just send me a text I will take the necessary measures.”
