Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu; Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Professor Suleiman Elias Bogoro; and Minister of Communication, Dr. Ida Ali, are among special guests scheduled to attend the first edition of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) International Week.
The government functionaries are to deliver the keynote addressees of the event.
The Week, which is to hold at the J.F. Ade Ajayi of the institution between Monday, October 14 and Tuesday, October 15th, 2019, seeks to address the requirements of effectively educating students in the 21st century.
Others, who are to also deliver key addressees at the event include: the Ambassador of France, Jérôme Pasquier; and Professor Peter McEleavy of the University of Dundee.
State governors to attend the event include: Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos); Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti); Adegboyega Oyetola (Osun); Oluseyi Makinde (Oyo) and Udom Emmanuel (Akwa-Ibom).
The state governors are expected to deliver goodwill messages and chair plenary sessions.
According to UNILAG’s vice chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the event would help to boost partnership and knowledge-sharing between the Nigerian academia and the rest of the world.
Ogundipe, a professor of Botany, also explained that the event would give Nigerians the platform to harness global opportunities.
He said, “The International Week is organised to advance one of the key purposes for which universities exist which is to provide thought leadership in the country.
“The fourth industrial revolution is upon us and I am not sure we are fully prepared as a country to harness its gains.
“This is why as a university we put this event together to provide a forum for cross fertilization of ideas between industry and academia, and between institutions from the global North and South as well as within the global South on the place of Nigeria in the fourth industrial revolution.”
The plenary sessions is to be centred on: Open Borders, Open Markets: Higher Education and the Challenge of Mobility and integration in Africa; Cities of the Future, Future of Cities; and Future of Work and Education in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Discussant at the session would include: Comptroller General of Immigration, Muhammed Babandede;
Registrar and Chief Executive, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB); Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede; British High Commissioner, Catriona Laing; Managing Director, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Ms Hadiza Bala Usman; and Professor Timothy Nubi, Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, UNILAG.
Others are: Mathieu Leila of French Embassy; Faheed Olajide of Endow Africa; Tola Adesina of the University of Derby, United Kingdom; Nadia Palmer of Kingston University, London; and the Acting Director, Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre, UNILAG, Sunday A. Adebisi.
Foreign partners scheduled to attend the event include: Education USA, DAAD, and CampusFrance among other top universities from the UK, Europe and South Africa.
