UNILAG Student Launches Book Store by Chukwu Daniel Ogbonna

Tejumade Adeyinka, a female undergraduate of the University of Lagos, has opened a book store for both students and lovers of prints.

The store which she named Streem started operations earlier this month and according to her was inspired ‎by the need to help parents solve the difficulties they face in searching for school textbooks for their children and wards.

Adeyinka said she was determined to use the service to meet the needs of “busy” parents and professionals who will prefer to have textbooks and inspirational books delivered at their doorsteps.

According to Tejumade, Streem is available mainly for the purchase and delivery of textbooks for children in primary and secondary schools.

She said the service benefits “busy” professionals, the elderly, all sorts of people adding that bespoke orders are accepted Streem.

On how Streem service works, Adeyinka stated, ‘‘Customers are expected to send a message to streemng@gmail.com with a list of books they would like to purchase.

“After, we’ll send an invoice based on the price list that we currently have. After approval, we agree on a delivery location as well as a mode of payment- which can be either cash on delivery, online transfer, full payment before delivery or half payment before delivery.’’

Speaking on how she got the inspiration for the establishment of Streem, she said the inspiration came while she was in secondary school adding that the like of Sunkanmi Aladenaye as business partner has helped the idea ‎materialize.

She recalled,”When I was in secondary school, I was usually given a list of books to be used at the beginning of a new session and my mom would pass through a lot to purchase these books from several bookstores.

“But now, I’ve realized that every parent is on the move and one hardly has a stay-at-home mom or dad anymore. We recognize this and felt there’s a need to bring to parents a fast and convenient way to purchase books for their children and importantly, have these books delivered at their doorsteps,”Adeyinka said.

UN Peace Day: Universal Peace Federation advocates sustainable peace, Development

By Chukwu Daniel Ogbonna

The Universal Peace Federation, UPF, Lagos State chapter, has reiterated its commitment towards ensuring that peace-driven development becomes a main stay in Nigeria.

The commitment was re-echoed by Dr. Charles Onwunali, while presenting a lecture at this year’s UPF commemoration of the United Nations International Peace Day themed “Sustainable Development Goals; Building Blocks for Peace.”

Dr Charles while presenting the lecture at the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography, University of Lagos, noted that the aim of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), was to redirect global resources towards creating a more peaceful and successful society by tackling the root causes of social tensions and conflict in the society.

Charles also noted that social inequality has marred some of the successes attained by the SDGs as the gap between the rich and the poor has continued to widen within and among nations.

He said, “While the United Nations Development Programme claimed that in 2013, extreme poverty has been reduced by half, the glaring hunger and deprivation caused by conflicts and mini-wars in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia has created enormous challenges for the Global community to examine the pitfalls of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).”

Furthermore, highlighting the merging of the SDGs to an already existing MDGs, the UNILAG lecturer lauded the addition of peace, justice and reliable institutions in order to ensure meaningful development.

He said, “This is a tacit recognition and acceptance that peace is sine qua non for any form of development. Peace is not abstract; for it to endure, it must be built on social justice.”

Recommending a solution, Charles said the only way SDGs could achieve its goals is for every member of the social system to be carried along as this will engender sustainable development that will continue for a long time.

“To carry everybody along, there must be peace. To create enduring peace, the resources available in the social system must be equitably distributed.

“Development is not only about creation of wealth, equitable distribution of that wealth is imperative,” he explained.

COPING WITH OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS; A STEP BY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS.

Health, they say is wealth, but while finding and creating wealth for ourselves and others, we could knowingly and unknowingly harm our health (in the service of mankind). Occupational hazards are hazards experienced in the field and area of work. In the health sector, these include HIV/AIDS from needle prick and more, EBOLA from contact, Hepatitis from contact, Tuberculosis among others.

Overtime, Occupational hazard has been a significant cause of ill-health and demise of health professionals, in and around the world as a whole. The case of Dr Adadevoh during the Ebola saga and all those other unsung health care service provider heroes that have at one point or the other laid their lives down for health cause, rings a bell in our hearts.

July 28th is the annual Worlds Hepatitis Day (themed; Know hepatitis – Act now, for 2016) celebrated globally. And in commensuration of this, SEHAM DIAGNOSTIC CENTRE, Lagos in conjunction with CMUL are screening and vaccinating all CMUL students of and against the killer viral disease – Hepatitis B (and for those positive with the virus, they are referred to the hepatitis clinic in LUTH also in collaboration with SOGHIN – Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria). The program held from Thursday 18th of 2016 to Monday 22nd of 2016, covering all levels and departments in CMUL/LUTH.

This initiative is a progressive process towards a healthy health care team which translates into a healthy population and in turn a wealthy nation, because indeed “health is wealth”. More of this programmes should be brought more often to the school environment and apart from the future health care professionals benefiting from it, that is student, the non-academic staffs and practicing professionals too should benefit from it; because whether we like it or not, occupational hazards are reducing and killing our highly insufficient health professionals in Nigeria and our world in general.

On a final note, anyone and everyone can be at risk or infected by hepatitis virus and an estimated 95% of people with hepatitis are unaware of the infection. So, get tested, know your status and act now!

Check out extortion at Fagunwa Hall by Aishat Adebiyi

It is a fact that the country is recently going through economic recession characterized by the high price of goods and services which makes it audible to the deaf and clear to the blind. However, even at this period where students struggle to buy the needed commodity at this high price, some sellers have decided to extort us by selling them at a higher price, prices that is obviously not as a result of the economic recession but the greed and love of these sellers to make higher profit at the detriment of others.

This brings me to the case of a woman who sells provisions at New Hall, Fagunwa Hall of Residence to be precise. Her goods are way too high, she needs to cut it! Things that are being sold at lower rates outside would be sold more expensive in her shop. Is this supposed to be happening in a school environment? She mostly feels we don’t have any choice than to buy it. Does the school have provisions for this please? If they do, we need to see the step taken on this please. It really bothers me.

I can remember going there one evening, I told her husband I wanted to buy onion noodles, he said seventy (70) naira, the woman did not say anything until I started complaining, then she then told me it is sixty (60) naira. If I had not complained, the woman would not mind me buying it at that rate. This is so for most of her commodity. Students complain and cannot do anything about it. I use this medium to plead that the appropriate authorities call her to order.

Press Release of The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) JCC Lagos Axis

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) JCC Lagos Axis has released a press statement as regards the fourteen (14) student union leaders arrested and tortured by the Nigeria Police. Below is a full text of the Press release:

PRESS RELEASE OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) JCC LAGOS AXIS

RE: 14 STUDENTS UNION LEADERS ARRESTED AND TORTURED BY‎ THE NIGERIA POLICE‎

THE TRUE SIDE OF THE STORY BY MOSES SAMSON ADEWALE, CHAIRMAN OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS, LAGOS AXIS.

“I believe that there will ultimately be a clash between the oppressed and those who do the oppressing. I believe that there will be a clash between those who want freedom, justice and equality for everyone and those who want to continue the system of exploitation. I believe that there will be that kind of clash, but I don’t think it will be based on the color of the skin…” Malcom X.

After series of consultation with the management of the University of Lagos, over the illegal rustication and suspension of the student leaders and the students union respectively have met outright undemocratic and unfatherly rejection, our grievances have been registered through more resolute consultations, peaceful protest and addressing a World Press Conference.

As law abiding citizens who believe in the Judiciary as the last hope of a common man, University of Lagos Students’ Union, ULSU had approached the court to seek justice against the unending sabotage of the rule of law as exercised by the management of University of Lagos. Worrisomely, the victimization does not only include violation of right to fair hearing as contained in chapter 4, sections 36, 39 and 40 of the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria but also brutally jeopardizes and demonically transgresses the fundamental human rights.

THE BRUTALIZATION OF HARMLESS STUDENTS BY THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE.

On Monday, 10th October 2016, the students under the platform of the constitutionally recognized National Association of Nigerian Students, Lagos chapter in solidarity with the victimized students of the University of Lagos, Akoka attended a court proceeding in respect of the unjust act on students as presented before the court.

After the adjournment of the court proceeding, the executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students, JCC Lagos State decided to have an emergency executive meeting along with some available comrades in order to prepare for a press conference so as to brief the World on the struggle so far. On their way to the venue, a total number of five students missed their way to Bariga since they are not familiar with the route, they decided to stop at Unilag-Yaba junction while waiting for direction from the NANS JCC Chairman. Instead of the men of the Nigerian Police Force to direct them, they alleged, molested, arrested and detained them which is a clear collaboration of the management of University of Lagos and the Nigeria Police Force (Sabo Police Station) to further inflict pain and to psychologically demoralize the already traumatized students.

The Nigeria Police had on Tuesday, 11th October, 2016 refuted a publication by a leading Online news outfit, Sahara Reporters that gave a concise and truthful report about the incident and further goofed by terming the law abiding students who came under the platform of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) as students of Lagos State College of Education as stated in a press release issued by the Nigeria Police. This action is not only capable of pitching both schools against each other but defaming the school known to be a front runner in producing teachers of high caliber and esteem.

While we advise the police who are funded by tax payers’ money to desist from pitching their tents with an undemocratic and draconic management that has continued to be despotic with its moves against the students and their voice which is the vibrant University of Lagos Students’ Union, ULSU , we also demand that the Nigeria Police apologise to students, staff and management of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education formerly Lagos State College of Education for the defamation they caused them, treat injured students and compensate them accordingly.

While we promise to resist further demonic actions against students and their umbrella Union, NANS, by the management of University of Lagos, we advise that all security agencies shouldn’t allow themselves to be used against the victimized students and the poor masses.

To this end, we say, Aluta continua, Victoria ascerta!!!

SIGNED:
Samson ADEWALE Moses,
Chairman NANS, Lagos State

MY DEEP THOUGHTS- A REFLECTION OF YOURS by Abigael Ibikunle

“Inside every person you know, there is a person you don’t know.” You tell me you care and that you’ll always be there. Yet it feels like you never said so ’cause it doesn’t seem so.

How do I know what you really feel when you have built strong walls so high around you? You treat me like trash, like someone who’s got nobody. Yet all I do is “keep calm” and make myself give excuses for your actions.

You’re good at manipulating people, making them see/believe whatever you paint as the reason for the season. For how long will that last knowing that those are just one of your excuses to justify your wanting to be alone. Maybe you are very comfortable with people patting your back, deceiving you pending when they’ll get what they need from you but I’m just not cut out for that, ’cause I’ve got conscience inside of me.

You’re now feeling like a super person because no one seems to be able to sit you and talk to you. I try several times to talk to you, make you see that I care and want to be there. But maybe you feel I don’t have much to offer; don’t know what’s up or I am just not good enough for you.

You have challenges! Yes you have issues but I often ask myself, who doesn’t? We are excellent at pressing the mute button. You should know that “so many problems and challenges will be solved if we talked to each other about it than talk about each other.” You literarily walked away but stayed around the corner, hoping that would make me believe you’re still around, so you can still get help when you need one. I’ll always be there, it’s what I’m excellent at…

Why are you doing this to yourself? You pretty much need help, then admit it. Urgent matters require urgent attention.

You say I don’t care but the question I’ve not been able to stop asking myself is “what did you do about the times I cared?” How have you dealt with our differences and misconceptions? Rather you allow yourself to presume and assume and be consumed by unconfirmed feelings. Have you ever taken time, just once to question silence?

” You can’t quote silence.” You know why? Because you need someone to open up before you know how deeply hurt you have made them feel. Your actions and ways you go about things have sent a whole lot of signals than it actually depicts.

I could go on and on but I’ve come to realise that it gets to a point that even words fail you at the point of expression.

My feelings are really deep and so deeper words are required to express them. I am not a perfect human and I believe you are not as well but we can live right irrespective of our differences and beliefs.

Why am I writing this? What brought this? Oh! Where did all this come from? Really, I can’t explain this, I just knew I wrote. What if someone out there feels this way or is even feeling this way?

Dean of Students Affairs (DSA) and Students Affairs Division (SAD): For or Against their Students?

$

Sometimes in the past year 2016, we had a lot of cause to meet with the Dean of Students Affairs or visit the Students Affairs Division both in Akoka or Idi-Araba as random students or students belonging to different bodies in the university either for our personal, group or general needs; and each encounter have been “interestingly multidimensional”, some ending with smiles, some with straight faces and others with outright frown.

Recounting these events from when different calls were placed through to students from the DSA’s office in Idi-Araba concerning their international associations and bodies their students belonged to, their activities in these associations, opportunities they get and on the long run turning out well, up to the extent of been sponsored to attend programs and event abroad, been organised by these international associations. This is one of the many situations that makes us happy and believe that our DSA is for us and not against us.

Even in Akoka, there were cases of when we (UNILAG students) had to host our national bodies and other international bodies, and the school was receptive and albeit helpful about it. Another plus to them and more reasons, why we love them. Also at a point, we were discussing in Akoka, and a student mention how the Counselling unit of UNILAG had different laid down plans and schemes for both indigenous and non-indigenous student of the great institution to make them comfortable, such as the “DAILY Meal FOR Students or One Meal DAILY SCHEME”, “WORK Study Scheme”, “various scholarships and gratitude to Scholars” amongst others.

But in all of these good deeds lay some major flaws and shortcomings, such as their actual “one to one relationship”, “one to many relationship”, “intermediate relationship” with the students and “DSA to Students Bodies”, which on the long run counters all the effects their good deeds; which isn’t supposed to be so. Without laying emphasize on any particular issue, but to start with, “whatever goes on in the four walls of the different offices, decisions we make and actions we take in the university as a whole, translates into what people – even outsiders – would say about us all… whether good, bad or ugly.

Of such cases is that of the fumigation exercises; sweet for some and sour for others, both in Akoka and Idi-Araba. Different news and various rumours were flying around but one thing remained constant and that is “the complete welfare and consideration of the students” was put in shades of grey and cyan – Unpleasant; which is supposed to be the priority of the DSA – Our keeper and Friend (relating our plights, pains and problems, our views and opinions to the school authority and management… Our Dean of Student Affairs is supposed to be about us, for us – the Students, even if it’s not “all” about us, it should be at least 50% of our welfare) like our Police Officers #StateOfTheNation.

Without sentiments or Emotions attached, just from the point of view of an onlooker, I feel our DSA should be for us, never against us. They should understand us, see and hear things from our point of views, know what we are going through at every stipulated time, understand our pains and cries, and not take our silence for granted. Our DSA should be Our “Ideal Police” – Friend and Keeper, not AntiStudent or AntiStudentWelfare, as various students often say. Different strokes for different folks, different reactions for different issues and different solutions for different problems. All cases shouldn’t be treated expressly and all decisions shouldn’t be made narrowly or on a one-way rollercoaster. Say what you mean, mean what you say, don’t make empty promises to us and be compassionate, please.

Our beloved DSA, we love you because you are our school “Mother and Father” and as we love our biological Mother and Father, we do you. So please, love us the same and place us in place of your Daughters and sons, which we – In the real sense – are. Let the love be mutual, as “our existence” in this university community is. We look forward to a positive change, as we are in the era of change and in the spirit of the yuletide season.

Welcome back to SCHOOL all and Happy New Year, as we all hope for the best this session and beyond.

The latter days of last year was a politically eventful period in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) as it was the election, appointment and handing over of the provost and some other key officials in the college.

Election for the various posts among the college staffs including the position of the provost was held on the 3rd of November, 2016, following the manifesto which was on the previous Wednesday. Professor Foluso Ebun Afolabi Lesi (Former Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Science, CMUL and a renowned Paediatric Consultant) emerged winner after the results of 177 votes against 70 votes for his opponent, Professor Okanlawon (Former Deputy Provost of the College).

Professor Folashade T. Ogunshola (Former Provost) handed over fully to Professor F. E. A. Lesi at resumption after the college’s 2 weeks’ vacation, at the very beginning of the new year, after her successful and remarkable 2 years tenure of been the first female provost in the history of the College.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Rahamon Ade Bello  has announced that the recently held convocation ceremony would be his last one as the Vice Chancellor of the University. He made this statement while delivering his welcome speech at the 49th convocation ceremony of the University which held at the Jelili Omotola hall formally known as the multipurpose hall.

“This is my last convocation ceremony as the Vice Chancellor of this University” he said. “My tenure, which began on the 12th of November 2012 will end on the 11th of November this year.”

Professor Rahmon Adisa Bello first resumed office on May 12, 2012, as Acting Vice Chancellor following the sudden death of former Vice Chancellor, Professor Adetokunbo Sofoluwe. He was formally appointed Vice Chancellor on November 12th, 2012.

So far, the administration of Professor Bello has seen the restoration and subsequent dissolution of student unionism in the University.

On the brighter side, it has seen the record breaking feat of students attaining the 5.0 cgpa both last year and this year, and the graduation of the highest number of graduates from Unilag so far, about 12,617. The Vice Chancellor ensured that all the graduating students received their certificates on their convocation day, unlike in earlier times.

The Vice Chancellor has barely ten months to go, before his five year tenure finally comes to an end.

COMPSSA ELECTIONS 2016/17: The wind of change is blowing! by George Uchendu, CMUL

From the streets of Washington DC to the hostels in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos CMUL/LUTH, the whole electioneering process of the last COMPSSA (College of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences Students Association) election seemed to carry the above statement. Over the last couple of years, COMPSSAites have yearned for quality and visionary leadership, a leadership with long lasting legacies and the yearnings continued, even into the last administration. The outgone administration christened THE DREAM TEAM by the immediate past provost (Prof. F. T. Ogunshola) showed lots of promises but delivered very little. This disappointing performance coupled with pent up frustration from previous years administration meant that the elections was going to be crucial in determining the further existence of COMPSSA as a union as some students were already calling for the nullification of the union.

Back to the elections, the last time an election was this heated up was in 2013 (between BIB and ALAGBADA). Various factors made the elections one to anticipate; the poor performance of the outgoing administration, 3 outgoing executives coming back in various positions, more than 1 presidential candidate and the emergence of a darkhorse in the presidential race (TRIPLE A).The last factor especially, gave the election a semblance of the USA elections going on at that point. Issues like the late inauguration of the electoral committee, wrangling between the “House of Lords” (Our own Senate house in CMUL) and the president as regards the final congress and rumours flying all over the place about some of the candidates made the election atmosphere tense.

Moves were made, consultations done at the dead of the nights, strategies plotted, rumours carried around but probably the most important thing during this period was that the student populace was talking – everyone was involved, no one could calm ignorant. COMPSSAites were getting involved. The vibe was electric, the feeling was more or less like ‘enough is enough’. Some COMPSSAites were of the opinion that nobody from the outgoing administration should be reelected as they had failed the people. This showed how personal people had taken the elections. The presidential election with 3 candidates (AY AGBAJE, SureGEORGE, TRIPLE A) was the classic case of experience vs fresh blood, favorite vs underdog, popular vs unknown. These candidates went around canvassing for support, for votes, making promises upon promises and trying to allay fears. Accusations were made by various camps and surely counter accusations followed. With the turn of events, the election was destined to be dicey as nobody was sure of where the pendulum would swing towards.

The electioneering process climaxed with the voting day as COMPSSAites coming out in their numbers to vote for their preferred candidates. After all said and done, the change chain was completed as the “underdog”, “unknown” and “fresh blood” TRIPLE A – Adunmoye Ayoade – emerged as the COMPSSA PRESIDENT with almost double the votes of his opponents and no outgoing executive coming back.

The result was a huge testament to the fact that COMPSSAites wanted change, a break from the norm and their votes gave them that. It is also an eye opener to future administrations; WORK OR GET KICKED OUT! No longer will COMPSSAites be held to ransom by failed promises as they will be involved with the administration from the get go.

And at the inauguration of the new COMPSSA executives on the 18th of January, 2017, with the provost, DSA, ACEO among other top CMUL officials seated, a total new ball game was set into motion for the whole of COMPSSAites and the entire College environment. Below is the link to the inaugural speech of the new COMPSSA president…

INAUGURAL ADDRESS OF COMRADE ADUNMOYE AYOADE, PRESIDENT OF COMPSSA (College of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Science Student Association) ON THE OCCASION OF HIS SWEARING IN CEREMONY AS COMPSSA PRESIDENT ON WEDNESDAY 18th JANUARY, 2017 AT THE OLD GREAT HALL, CMUL LAGOS

The provost of this great citadel of learning;

The deputy provost

The secretary of the college

The director of student affairs

Assistant director of student affairs

Deans of faculty

Heads of department

Stakeholders present

My colleagues and fellow COMPSSAITES

In all things, as the Bible compels us, we must give thanks to the almighty God. I sincerely thank and give glory to almighty God, the alpha and the omega, the ancient of days, the I am that I am, the king of kings and lord of lords, the controller general of the whole universe, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the one that says yes and no one can say no and the one that says no and no one can say yes. The one that knows the end from the beginning because He is the beginning and the ending. And as the Bible says, He is the one that raiseth up the poor out of the dust and lifteth up beggars from the dunghill to set them among princes and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the lord and He hath set the world upon them. To those who still doubt the supremacy and miracle of our living God, my victory at the poll on the 16th of December is more than an ample evidence that our God reigneth and is good all the time. I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. I didn’t have the popularity, infact, many voted for me having never met or seen me personally. Just like Donald Trump, I am an entrepreneur with low political profile. I have been actively involved in COMPSSA politics right from my 200 level days. I campaigned and worked with three different administrations. Throughout this time, I didn’t show interest to contest any elective post until late last year. I didn’t contest this post just to become president but because I was desperate to make a meaningful difference. I once volunteered myself to be a member of the taskforce to checkmate the excesses of the extortionist in the COMPSSA complex and college environment, but unfortunately, I was sentimentally ostracized by the last administration. Well, I can say that the stone which the builder rejected has now become the head of the corner. I give all the glory to God.

I want to specially appreciate the DSA headed by the indefatigable disciplinarian in the person of Prof. Folashade Akinsola and the electoral committee chaired by the academic guru, Mr. Alade azeez for doing a thorough job to ensure transparency of the electoral process. I must also appreciate my opponents for this position Uchendu George and Ayobami Agbaje for the spirit of sportsmanship espoused by them before, during and after the election. They campaigned long and hard and endured sacrifices for COMPSSA more than we can imagine. They are great leaders indeed and I look forward to working with them to move our association forward. I congratulate the outgoing president and other executives for a successful tenure. I also congratulate all the elected excos and I consider it a privilege to be among such great minds.

I would not be standing here today without the unflinching support of friends and fellow comrades who God used to make my landslide victory a reality. To my campaign coordinator Gbenga Raphael (mentorium), my chief strategist Deji Gbogi (Jagaban of medilag), my ever supportive, tenacious and courageous chief mobilizer and adviser Akadiri Tayo [ The iron lady] and the triple A campaign team; you made this happen and I am forever grateful for what you have sacrificed to get this done. I will also never forget the immense contributions of these wonderful people: The outgoing lord chancellor of COMPSSA, Lord Anjolajesu Seun [okasaki]; a man of integrity, vision and value and the person who initiated the idea of contesting this position. Also the “no nonsense” former lord chancellor of COMPSSA Lord Adeniyi Babatola, the 2010/2011 COMPSSA president, Mr. Oluwaseun Ogunbona who endorsed my candidacy from USA, 2011/2012 COMPSSA president,Mr. Omojomi Banjo who endorsed my candidacy from Canada, the 2012/2013 COMPSSA president in the person of Mr. Wale Abiodun Peter who gave priceless ideas and suggestions, 2013/2014 president in the person of Mr. Balogun Ismail Babatunde who tactically endorsed me during the debate, 2014/2015 COMPUSA president in the person of Mr. Folashade anthony (Medicanthos) who endorsed and gave his overwhelming support for me. I appreciate you all and I won’t disappoint the trust and confidence reposed in me. I also appreciate the contribution of various stakeholders in the likes of Big Josh, Otunba Niyi, Akinola Shehu, Adeleke Yusuf, Brumeh, Deolu, Sandra ,Martins, Glory, Grace and various unsung heroes who campaigned from the depth of their heart for my candidacy. I will remain indebted to you for your efforts in making my trump like ascension into this office possible.

Today, we enter into a sacred covenant with you, great COMPSSAITES; with this covenant we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our union into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this covenant, we will be able to work together, to dine together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that our light will shine once again. Let it be echoed in the four corners of this great college and beyond the shores of this community, let it be repeated by generations to come, that in this day, at this historic place and in this historic time, the concerted efforts of stakeholders both among student and staff provided opportunity for the union light to shine again. This shining light today is snatched from the jaws of defeat and delivered to the doorsteps of victory. Never again in the history of this union shall COMPSSAITES be held to ransom by any government or administration. I have named this a collective rescue mission. The vision is clear; the mission is here. My vision is for COMPSSA to be an independent union that will represent an inclusive and vibrant student community in which members have the opportunity to expand their horizons, reach their full potentials and change the world around them. My mission is to create and sustain an open administration anchored on quality leadership and committed to student welfarism with progressive innovations and ideas that will champion the union now and in the future.

I have seven point agenda enshrined in the COMPSSA acronym.

C- Concrete legacy projects

O- Overhauling the COMPSSA complex

M- Money making ventures for increased IGR

P- Partnership with school and sponsors for improved infrastructure

S- Small scale business enterprise for COMPSSAITES

S- Social and sporting facilities for all round development

A- Activation of COMPSSA to a respectable and formidable union.

These agenda will be pursued with vigour and passion and the much deserved comfort and welfarism will no longer elude us. This administration shall not only be transparent and accountable but the good of COMPSSAITES would be the template.

Fellow COMPSSAITES, the state of our union calls for urgent, bold and swift action. The COMPSSA complex has been reduced to a dumping site. Illegal occupants have taken over our car park that should be a source of income to the union. The tenants in and around the complex extort students with “reckless abandon”. Our cafeteria has been turned to an oven. Our present situation is a challenge that requires our collective effort and creative devices to resolve. I am determined to ensure that this new administration will be the type that will make future generations proud of what we did here. This administration will make good on the debt we owe past and future generations.

Fellow COMPSSAITES, what happened at the poll had strengthened my bond with you. I won’t pretend that this path will be easy and rosy. I never have. You didn’t elect me to always tell you what the management want, you elected to tell the management what you want, to carry and amplify your voices to them, to vociferate your demands in a bid to ensure that we all have a comfortable stay on this campus. I want to assure you that I with other elected servants, will effectively represent your interest without fear of intimidation, victimization or harassment. I am too God intoxicated to be academically intimidated. I have always believed that leadership position comes with responsibility and sacrifice and I am ready to pay every single sacrifice required to make COMPSSA great again.

Greatest COMPSSAITES, this new administration will ensure the independence of the union as provided for in article 1 section 1b of the constitution. No longer will it be necessary for DSA to interfere on matters between the union and the COMPSSA tenants. Collection of free food is declared gross misconduct that will attract stiff penalty under this administration. True, we must ensure politics of meaning and eschew dishonesty and selfishness in our dealings.

In this sense, I want to assure that there will be neither recrimination nor retaliation under this tenure. Without doubt, we will undertake a comprehensive review of what had transpired before this time especially in the last twelve months as should be expected, but this is with a view to strengthening the fabric of good governance and correcting the ills of the past and not an exercise of witch-hunting.

To the pharmacy students, I say this is your time. No longer will you be marginalized. I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all departments and faculties. Faculty of pharmacy might not be directly under the college, but the students are under the union. Their dues form an integral part of the money generated by the union each year. I cannot sit idly by in my office and not be concerned about what happens in pharmacy. Without pharmacy, there won’t be COMPSSA. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. This administration will ensure that the rights and privileges of pharmacy students are no longer trampled upon. Those retroactive policies and unjust decisions will be vehemently resisted. Oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever. The urge for freedom will eventually come and now is the time for the realization of that freedom.

Greatest COMPSSAITES, now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to everybody. Now is the time to lift our union from the quicksand of corruption and maladministration to the solid rock of righteousness and justice. Now is the time to restart the clock of progress of our dear union. Now is the time for a new beginning, one for which all of us must roll up our sleeves to begin the rebuilding of our union which was hampered by gross incompetence and administrative mendacity. We will have to make hard choices but be assured that they will lead to a better end.

On the national level, this administration will sponsor a bill to the national assembly to prevent political aspirants above the age of 70 years from contesting any political position. Now is the time for the youths to take their rightful place in the politics of our dear country.

I forfeit all remunerations and allowances due to me as the compssa president for the greater good of the union. I will also ensure that we cut down on the recurrent expenditures. We will partner effectively with the House of Lords to ensure that the union is taken to the majestic height of greatness and brotherhood. We will also partner with sponsors and alumni for improved infrastructure. There would be business opportunity and COMPSSAITES empowerment would be a priority. No longer will COMPSSAITES especially our ladies be assaulted or denigrated as the union will always protect and defend them at all times. Prices of goods and services within the college will be regulated and defaulters will be chased out. We will collaborate and negotiate with the management for cleaner environment and for stable water and electricity supply. Academic tutorials will come alive while academic excellence will be bountifully rewarded. On this note, I appeal to the management to ensure prompt release of results and accommodation should be made free for our exceptional students. Free Wi-Fi should also be made available in the hostel for easy learning and research. I know that our new provost who was an exceptional student of this college and who is an exceptional doctor and teacher and who will be an exceptional provost will get this done.

I do not believe that my administration coming up at a time when the college just got a new provost is a mere coincidence or an occurrence by happenstance. I am confident that “Prof” would be a phenomenal provost. It is therefore a great opportunity and privilege to have Prof. Lesi as our provost this time. I hereby reaffirm our willingness to work with the new provost and with our mother and father in division of student affairs; Prof. Akinsola and Mr. Adesanya respectively.

Before I am done with this speech, I will like to reiterate that the challenges before this government are enormous. We are however not rattled by them. We have the capacity and determination to surmount them all. We shall do this by the help of God and the cooperation of everybody. I thank you and may the good Lord bless us all.

Long live COMPSSA

Long live the federal Republic of Nigeria
